Toronto Employment Survey 2019
Since 1983, the City of Toronto has monitored employment within the City by conducting an annual employment survey. Each summer, our team of field researchers conducts face-to-face interviews with every business throughout the City (approximately 75,680 in 2018), resulting in a comprehensive survey of Toronto employers. The information about each business is treated as strictly confidential and is released only in aggregate form to show employment patterns without revealing information about individual businesses.
Data from this survey is a foundational piece for economic and land use planning in Toronto and is essential to planning for the delivery of city services such as those of the TTC. It is critical for Official Plan and policy studies, local area studies, economic sector analysis, municipal budget preparation, and performance measurement tracking and benchmarking. This data source is an important public service, with the data being shared with city agencies, boards and commissions as needed, so that it is only collected once.
This is the only annual and comprehensive source of information on the number of jobs in the City. It is an essential indicator in tracking Toronto’s economic performance and is used in support of the City’s bond rating. It provides an information edge in dealing with the larger GTA and is valued by Councillors, City departments, other public sector clients and the private sector.
The continued success of this important survey depends upon participation by businesses like yours. Throughout the next four months, a member of our survey team will visit each business in the City of Toronto. The interview will only take a few minutes of your time. If you own or manage buildings, please allow our surveyor to visit business occupants. If you have any questions about the Survey, please e-mail City staff at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
